New To Driving?

How would you define Driving?

Be it a car, motorcycle, scooter, bus or even a bicycle.. ?

Is it an art? hobby? necessity? curse? feature or bug??

No matter what, driving has become an integral part of everyone's life and I'm sure everyone at some point in their life has wanted to drive a vehicle.

Well, there is a common misconception between operating a vehicle and driving the vehicle. Would you ask how?

Let me take an example of a bike, Say, I know how to start the vehicle, accelerate, change gears, turn, brake and stop. I can very well say, I know how to operate the vehicle. At the same time, there's an additional soft skill required for me to claim of driving. Well, it's not just the traffic rules, but some common sense added to it.

Have you seen a lot of two wheelers without a rear view mirror. Well, some of them do, but in some skewed angle where it won't serve the purpose. If it does serve purpose, it would be when the vehicle is parked so that someone can comb his/her hair or put on some quick make-up.. I've also heard some high-speed bikers complain..

"It's just a burden while maneuvering in jam-packed traffics".

People may just ignore the fact that it is very important to look at the mirror whenever they change their position on the road. It's very important for avoiding accidents. Similarly, there are lots of cars with their rear view mirrors folded at all times.

You may come across people claim

"I only took 4 classes of driving lessons and I'm already on the road."

Well, I'd say if pride is making your eyes blind, better think twice before you face the consequences. I bet at least 50% of car drivers (even license holders) don't yet know the term "Blind Spot" or what it means while driving. I really wonder if they teach all these things in driving schools which just enable one to obtain a drivers license.

Usage of signal lights or hand indications is only a luxury than necessity for some.

Well, I'm not here to do just all the cribbing, but there is nice information available on the web and wish people make use of them.. One of them has been quoted below, and quite a lot can be found..

Sound Mind in a Sound Body

Physical Fitness!

Does it only affect physical health or does it influence mental fitness also?Someone said "A sound mind resides only in a sound body". Same has been emphasized in our olden literature.

For ex. in Tamil, Tirumoolar , in his "Tirumanthiram" says

"Udambai Valarthen, Uyir Valarthene.."

which literally translates to

"I grew body, I grew soul.."

Surfing through Internet, I found something interesting. There is a little known fact about Anil Ambani, one of the richest persons in India. Did anyone know he weighed 115kgs, before turning into a "Self proclaimed fitness freak"? The story goes like this..

Anil Ambani's obsession with fitness began a few years ago, when, famously, a foreign investor told him that they would think twice about investing in a company whose management was not in good health.

So, what does this tell us? Is there another meaning for Darwin's "Survival of the fittest" ?Food for thought, is it?
let me know what you think about it.. Meanwhile, I'll go and have my samosa chat..

New Years, Resolutions and me..

First I would like to wish all the friends a wonderful new year. What is the resolution for this new year?

It was on the radio couple of days back, someone was telling that new year resolutions need not just be taken on the new year eve itself, but it can go up to nine days... that is, time is still there to make vows... Is that true? Don’t know. I don’t mind sharing what has happened with me so far..

To be frank, I started following this “concept” of new year resolutions very recently (past three years or so) and have been working on how to device them and to make sure how they won't affect my day to day lifestyle and yet be beneficial..

The plan of action, as it goes..

Well, it should be a win win...

ok.. sounds good!..

but what are you trying to achieve?

mmm... some betterment.

fine; Let me see how it works

First, should I “Start something new” or “Stop something existing”

Well, To start something new seems easier as you know it’s tough to change/lose habits…

Next, Hardness level: easy – medium – hard…

what to choose? Did anyone say New Year Resolutions should be “Super Hard”? Let me go with the medium stuff..

Subject decided. (Hoorray!! But I don’t want to get into the specifics) How to go about it? I have only 365 days left…. Can I spare a day or two for that?

So, the year starts like this and the first couple of weeks go by planning in detail as to how well I am going to execute this resolution.

Now, a plan has been devised.

Does it need alterations? Exceptions?

Does it hold good all the time or there are any loopholes?

Let me carefully note down all the “if” conditions.. What are all the possible combinations? (How best to break the vows ourselves without being questioned) Ultimately a two page draft is made. (Rough or final?)

Is that an agreement? If so, with whom? Myself? Do I need to sign it?

Do I need a witness?

(Too much of documentation!?!. Did you deal with any government authority lately?)

OK, Come on! Take it easy.. But how will I come to know if I am adhering to it or not? (Also make sure it doesn’t affect anything else)

OK, Let me put a oral intimation to the close ones, and leave it to fate whether they keep that in mind or not! (So that I can conveniently forget so that I can put the blame on others for not reminding me in case I don’t adhere…)

And it is close to last week of January that the resolution is going to be finally accepted. (Already three weeks gone, why not start in February?)

No. It comes with “immediate” effect. Checkpoints set to every Sunday (Did I or Did I not?)

Report card as follows.. (No one has to sign this one though!)

January .../.../.../pass (Great me!)
February pass/pass/pass/pass (That’s cool!..)
March pass/fail/pass/pass (Oh no! I forgot.. Someone remind me..)
April pass/fail/fail/pass (OK, someone reminded)
May pass/fail/fail/fail (It’s getting hot man.. )
June fail/fail/fail/fail (….mmmmmm……)
July fail/fail/fail/fail (Weather is just too nice)
August ……………... (What?)
September ……………... (Did i?)
October ……………... (Oh! Come on)
November ……………... (Forget it!)
December ……………... (Ok… let’s do something next year!)

After going through this intensive course, I decided that next year, I should try something that I can really achieve. What best can it be? OK.. New year comes and Someone asks me

“What is the New Year resolution this year? “

“Well, Not to take such resolutions any more… “ (Seriously!!)

And you know what? People don’t give up that easily. They come back to me this year and ask the same question.. Guess what my answer is?

“The resolution is to stop talking to people who ask this question.”

Happy New year!

Nostalgia

It had always been a great fantasy to walk down the famous MG road in Bangalore for almost a decade, until after nine years I got a chance yesterday. Yes the road hadn’t changed much except for a few buildings and new hoardings and banners, the momentum was still there with all those crowded shops and buildings and the late evening crowds.. I could still figure out the same building with the elephant on the front elevation.. It was not a Déjà vu, but I wished I could go back in time and bring the same person into me so who wanted to walk down the road along with friends making noise and exclaiming and commenting every substance that would cross their way.

The first time I walked down this road, as a kid who had come to the city with his parents and relatives to see the modern lifestyle. It was wonderful to see a bank where they would give money any time of day, they told me “Any Time Money” and that was my definition of ATM until I learnt what an “Automatic Teller Machine” was and learnt how it worked.

The second time, it was even more fantastic as a final year high school student, who had come to attend the SSB interview for a week’s duration. Every evening, it was a “must go” place to find some relaxation after the hard day’s efforts. I used to dream how wonderful it would be to wander across the same road five years later as a grown up man who will have got all the money to do all he wanted to do.

This was my third time here.. I could not make it to Bangalore after five years from that earlier moment, but I could do that five years after college at least. I thought I had some money to fulfill my own dreams and to do what I wanted to do nine years ago. On the contrary, there was something major missing.

“Was that money?”
“No!”
“Was that the company of friends?”
“No.. I have my best friend who is also a college classmate, walking right next to me”

But where did the enthusiasm go? I was wondering if it was unique to me, until I noticed the similar feeling in my friend. In fact, he was looking gloomier than me.

“Stop!” I said.. “Man, are we really walking down one of the most happening places in the country?”
“I thought so, but now wondering if we really do..” He replied.
“Would we have enjoyed a little bit at least, had we been here around a couple of years back?”
“The places, the beauties, all the fun and what not?; but I wonder why nothing is really fascinating!”
“How did emptiness occupy us when we had everything we wanted? Did life lose quality as our lifestyles got better?”
“Perhaps, the more you think you have; the more problems and worries it brings along with it!”
“Didn’t we dream for all this until this moment?”
“We still do; but the way we look at it differs until you have it”

Things have changed a lot or rather our minds.. Where has life led me all these days? Did I keep gaining or losing all the time? Is that an unknown maze that I am walking in without knowing which direction to go? Can I, for once go back to that little young man who had nothing with him, but nothing to stop him from enjoying the moment?
